As the Amazon reviewer I instantly thought John Martyn, but not as good. Rating 3.50. | I Forgot Where We Are (2014) Part of an Amazon customers review. Hearing this record for the first time took me right back (40 years!) to the experience of hearing 'Inside Out' by John Martyn as his follow up to 'solid air'. He (like Ben Howard) also started out as an acoustic folk singer with excellent guitar technique. He (like Howard on this album) then added a whole new dimension by using delay and distortion pedals and electric guitars and a looser jazzier feel. I also hear parallels in the wonderful bass playing on this record. None of this is to suggest that Howard's music is in any way derivative of Martyn's, rather it's by way of paying him the ultimate compliment - I only hope that Ben Howard can continue to delight us for as long as John Martyn did. I love the darker sound here, I love the attention that he has given to guitar tone, I love the way that the instrumentation is layered, but not over produced. This really is a brilliant record. |
