Very different TJW album, released in the 90s it has a bit of a pop beat on some tracks. Still OK has bluesy tracks as well so will give it a a 3/5.

Deep Cuts The Swamp Fox. That's what they call Tony Joe White. The moniker is true to his roots while suggesting his cunning nature and readiness to surprise anyone. It is with this in mind that Tony Joe White unleashes Deep Cuts, a collection of new recordings of familiar hits, along with several brand new tracks, all cleverly treated with contemporary beats, loops and samples that reincarnate Tony Joe's originals into a modern brand of swampy, breathy blues rock. (from Amazon UK) Completely different to what I've heard from TJW, more upbeat and rocky, but still amazing! A 4/5 rating. Lake Palcid Blues Having a "Tony Joe White Fest" this is the 3rd album of 5 I'm listening to tonight. Once again another good album, differs slightly from One Hot July & The Shine as it has a more rock/country blues feel. Stand out tracks for me were Let The Healing Begin & Down Again, just love the subtle guitar and harp! The Shine (2010) "Great record from the master of swampy roots music. Here you have it all, Tony's great mumbling vocals, his songs (mostly dealing with the life in the country), a subtle production and sensitive backing. Recommended!" (From Amazon UK) A nice change from my recent downloads, this is a smooth delicate mix of good songs, vocals & melodies, must agree with the review above Recommended. My rating 4/5. Blues Magnet Good solid hard rocking blues album, only had one listen so far and liked what I heard a 4/5. http://www.pattravers.com/ http://www.myspace.com/officialpattravers Afterglow (2012) After my first listen, was a bit disappointed not one track had the wow factor. Joe Bonamassa guitar is as good as ever but I found Glen Hughes's vocals a bit same old same old on most tracks. May be a grower will give it more plays. http://bccommunion.com/ Apocryphon (2012) My 4th album from The Sword, I believe this is a concept album, just sounds as heavy and with the addition of a new drummer, better than ever! Loud Mayhem. https://www.facebook.com/theswordofdoom http://www.myspace.com/thesword https://twitter.com/TheSword http://swordofdoom.com The Foundling (2010) A complete change from the blues and rock I've bought recently, need this some times to really appreciate other genres. With a Folk & Country sound this album tells her early life story. Described by an Amazon reviewer; (click album cover) Mary is definitely an acquired taste - a 100% cult artist. But that doesn't mean that her music isn't accessable. This album is superb. It's a twelve track song cycle that tells the story of an abandoned child's journey through life. The subject matter is quite bleak and sad at times but somehow the whole feel of the album is positive and uplifting. Mary's voice has never sounded better and the sparse acoustic backing is spot on. It may take a few plays to latch on to what "The Foundling" is all about but its worth it. A masterpiece! Must agree with most of this review, 2nd listen now and liking it a lot, knowing the concept of this album helps it all come together. Don't get the reviewer's idea of "uplifting" this is depressing record, songs & lyrics are excellent though! Uplifting as any Leonard Cohen song! My second album of Mary's, have Mercy Now from 2004, another good album with great tunes & words. |
